Moose Poker Ride 2011 - MOAR Updates!

MOAR UPDATES

Location: Park at the 2km mark of Moose Mountain Road [see map below] - this is the spot where Sulphur Springs crosses the road.  The turnoff to Moose Mountain Road is about 2km past Station Flats along Hwy 66, SW of Bragg Creek [the turnoff is to the right of Hwy 66].  Watch for vehicles, cyclists and hikers on the road.  While there are no outhouses at this location, there are plenty of trees.  If you really need an outhouse, Station Flats is probably your best bet.

Time: Saturday, September 24th.  We'll be set up and ready to sign people in by 11:00 a.m. The ride will start at NOON. Try and be back by 4:00 p.m., 'cause that's when we start giving the prizes away.

BBQ:  We'll start up the BBQ around 3:00 p.m., or earlier if people get back sooner.  We'll have burgers [veggie and beef], sausages, pop, "beverages", water and misc other stuff.

What to bring: Your bike and biking gear, water, whatever you would normally take on a ride. Bring a chair to sit around in after the ride.

The Ride:  The ride is the modified Moosepackers loop.  The cards are at the start of Moosepackers, the bench on R3 [south end of the ridge on Ridgeback], the new bridge on R2 Check the map for details.  Note that you don't have to ride the exact loop if you don't want to - the cards are found on Moosepackers and Ridgeback, but not Sulphur Springs or Pneuma.

Cost: CMBA members = FREE. Buy a membership on-site for $20.

Map: The red line is 98% singletrack, ~25 km of it.  The blue line is the route from Hwy 66 to the start/finish. Click the map to view the image larger in a new window.

For those of you who have Google Earth, a KMZ file is attached below.

Don't forget to let us know you're coming.  See you on Saturday!

CMBA is doing a poker ride!

***UPDATE***

Looks like the weather is cooperating - should be sunny and in the 20s for Saturday!  I get to work on my tan...  Picked up prizes from our good friends at TransRockies today [early bird pricing on TR2012 ends soon - get signed up!].  Thanks A!  Hopefully we'll get some more swag for all you CMBA members in the next couple of days.  Saturday is going to be awesome - I can almost taste Sidewalk Citizen Bakery's scones now - Aviv is going to slap down some dough for us.

Don't forget to let us know if you're coming!  We need to make sure that nobody goes hungry or THIRSTY.

Like the sign says, this event is for CMBA members - memberships are still available!

Why members only?

Insurance, plain and simple. We know YOU would never sue the CMBA, but somebody else might. Memberships are only $20, and you get a swell keychain.

Fine, I'll get a membership. How much is this shindig going to run me?

$0 [i.e. FREE] for any CMBA members. $20 for anyone else who just shows up and fills out a membership form.

So what's actually happening on the 24th?

  • CMBA is running a Poker Ride from the 2km mark of Moose Mountain Road [where Sulphur Springs crosses the road].
  • A Poker Ride is a friendly bike thing where you ride a loop and collect playing cards from predetermined points on the loop. You can get up to 6 [six] cards, and use 5 [five] of them to form a poker hand. Best poker hand get first pick of the prizes.
  • There will be a BBQ and beverages, courtesy of CMBA and whoever we can trick into giving us stuff.

What the?! So you're saying I just have to be a CMBA member, show up with my bike, ride the loop, collect cards, eat and drink for free and maybe win a prize? JHTC! Where do I sign up?

Right here: http://moosepoker2011.eventbrite.com

Is there a special category for women? Kids?

No. This isn't a timed event [well, you can time yourself if you want, but we're not going to do it for you]. You could be the last person across the line and still have the best hand.

Do you need any help getting set up or working the card handout, etc.?

Yes, and thank you for asking. Contact david.mills@cmbalink.com for all volunteer-type stuff. We need people to give out cards, help with registration, dispense beverages, cook food, set up the tents, etc. The more the merrier. Volunteers get complimentary food and drink [CMBA membership not required].

When should I show up?

Sept. 24, 2011 - the ride starts at noon. You can pick up your plates starting at 11:00 a.m. Plate pickup will finish by noon.

What trails are we riding?

Pneuma, Sulphur Springs, Moosepackers, Ridgeback

When do we need to be back?

We'll start sorting through the poker hands at 4:00 p.m., so you should be back by then.

I have so many more questions!

Patience, grasshopper. All shall be revealed in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the ride!

Thanks to everyone who came out for the first [but likely not the last] CMBA Moose Poker Ride. Pics will be up in the next couple of days.  I think the winning hand was five-of-a-kind - all aces.  Yes, that counts. Next up was a natural royal flush, then a few unnatural royal flushes [jokers wild]. Long story short, we had 30 people on the ride, and signed up 12 new members! We'll be doing this again, count on it.

Thanks to the volunteers: Michelle, Dave, Olivier, Andrew, Chris, Kim, Don and Richard. Y'all did a great job.

Thanks to Gord for posting the event up on the COC website.

Thanks to our sponsors for providing prizes:

Sidewalk Citizen Bakery - Aviv's scones were a big hit! Seriously, if you haven't tried his artisan bread delivered to you downtown every Tuesday, you are missing out.

TransRockies - Jerseys and DVDs!

Bow Cycle - thanks for the swag!

Cyclepath - we appreciate the goodies!

Bowness Pub - Oh snap! Gift certificates to a bar. Thank you.
