Dirt Jump Parks - still working on it...

November 2006

For the past 3 years CMBA has actively been promoting the creation of dirt jump parks in Calgary. We have identified a number of sites with potential and have attempted to get three sites constructed. While all of the sites had good potential, development was prevented on each site due to liability issues and politics.

The failure of these attempts has made it clear that policy changes have to occur at the City Administration level before a dirt jump park will become a reality. CMBA is now working with City Parks planning personnel to have City Parks given a mandate to create and manage dirt jump parks. They are scheduled to create a draft proposal that is to be delivered to the Parks Director by December. After it has been accepted at that level it will be presented to City Council for approval. When approved City Parks will have a clear mandate and responsibility to create dirt jump parks.

It appears that there is a clear intent and interest within City Parks to provide dirt jump parks. Individuals can help speed the process through City Council by writing or emailing their alderman to voice support for the creation of dirt jump parks in Calgary. Go here for addresses.

Dirt Jump Park Update III

March 2005

We have been very busy with trying to locate the new location for a first class jump site. As some of you know, we lost our original site off Nose Hill on the river. The Alberta Transportation Utility was "most" helpful on providing the land, however we found the City had so many restrictions on the property, it wasn't worth it.

Sorry to all those that had their hopes up. We would like to thank the several that supported us with actual drawings of what the park would look like.

We are now working closely with ... yes, a nice switch, our friends at the City of Calgary ... we have had great support from them on sourcing land that would be a "quick" fix to get going with.

Glenn has been on top of this, and no doubt we will have more to come soon ... stay tuned!

Dirt Jump Park Update II

September 2003

Well....after a lot of walking, talking and nail biting, we have some great news....we have a potential site for our first dirt jump park in Calgary...

It can be ready as early as this spring, and the location is excellent for all riders....easy road, and bike path accessibility, and a big parking lot to boot.

Are you interested in helping out? PLEASE, get involved with us, and continue to show your support (and buy a membership) to CMBA. We will be calling for help to build this soon, so keep watching for info as it unfolds.

Thanks for your support thusfar, and hope to see all of you with shovels in hand soon.

Dirt Jump Park Update I

June 2003

Earlier this year CMBA asked for input on potential dirt jump parks. We received a large number of suggestions that resulted in over 30 potential sites being identified. Danny and John from the Dirt Jump Park committee visited each of the sites. They evaluated them on a number of criteria that included access to dirt, potential to disrupt other people, access to water, terrain and closeness to facilities such as Mac's (got to have a slurpee from time to time).

zoo mapThrough this process 4 sites were picked. The number one site is a site close to the zoo referred to as Calgary Zoo North. It has good terrain, access to public transportation, is City Park's property and is close to facilities. The site is disturbed land and is away from residential development. It is also centrally located making it a good choice for a demonstration park.

Calgary Zoo North Site - This is the committee's number one choice and is still very much an option.

The second choice was property on the Glenmore Athletic Park. It is centrally located and, being part of the Athletic Park, has facilities close by. Access via bike paths and public transit is good. On the downside it is close to residential development.

The third site was at the intersection of Macleod Trail and Anderson Road. This site had significant potential but is now being developed so it cannot be used for a dirt jump park.

The forth site is at Anderson Road and 37th Street. It is less central than other sites but has good public transit and bike path access. It is a large area that is away from residential development. Facilities are close by and the terrain is good.

glenmore mapLast week these sites were presented to a number of City personnel in order to gain feedback and move the selection of a site forward. In attendance from the City was the:

  • Sport Development Coordinator, Recreation, City-Wide Services
  • Supervisor, Arenas / Athletic Parks Operations, Recreation, Arenas & Athletic Parks
  • Corporate Youth Strategy Coordinator
  • Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, Public Education & Programs, Calgary Parks
glenmore location
Glenmore Athletic Park Site - This is the committee's second choice. It has good potential but is very close to residential development. The Park's department feels that, due to the history of this property, this may be a serious problem.

As well we had attendance from a private landscape architect who is working on getting a multi-use dirt jump park developed in Springbank Hills. Response was excellent with many excellent suggestions and other sites being identified. Direct outcomes from the meeting are a review of the Odgen Dry Rubble site for applicability, meetings being set up with a representative from the Alberta Government who is responsible for leasing land within the transportation utility corridor surrounding Calgary, and a meeting being set up to review corporate funding options. All participants have agreed to continue to pursue the initiative.

The concept of creating one or more dirt jump parks seems to have a great deal of support and good will within the City administration. While there is still much hard work ahead to make it happen the committee is confident that we will be successful.

CMBA works with City to develop Dirt Jump Parks

January 2003

CMBA is working with the City of Calgary to locate appropriate areas to develop dirt jump parks. The dirt jump parks will provide sanctioned areas for freeriders to improve their skills and enjoy their sport. The long term goal is to locate parks in each quadrant of the City in order to allow access by bike or public transportation. Danny air This will provide facilities for young riders that do not have access to a car for transportation to less accessible venues such as COP. The initial goal is to locate a single site that is accessible and meets the immediate needs of freeriders. This site will be developed as a demonstration site. If it is successful then other sites will be identified and developed.

CMBA expects that the creation of dirt jump parks will reduce the impact on City natural areas from people building illegal jumps and ramps. By providing accessible sanctioned parks young people will have an outlet for their sport without having to resort to creating hidden tricks in natural areas. The park will also provide a venue for youth to develop physical skills and a healthy recreation.

CMBA members and long time freeriders, Danny Laroche and John Taplin with help from Radek Burkat have begun the process of creating selection criteria to aid the City in site selection. Once a site is selected that meets these criteria CMBA will enter into an agreement with the City to license the property as a dirt jump park. CMBA members will also take on the responsibility of designing and developing the park.

You can help these parks become a reality. CMBA needs members from the Freeride community in order to demonstrate support for this facility. Joining CMBA will show you want these sorts of facilities in the City. It is a small investment to increase your future riding opportunities.

CMBA is excited to be able to support a growing side of the mountain biking community with this venture. Together we can increase the riding opportunities available to all Calgarians.

Criteria for a Dirt Jump Park

  1. We are looking for an area that is approximately 2 acres in size.
  2. We would like access to water (preferably tap versus creek/pond), water is the secret to great dirt jumps...
  3. We would prefer areas not directly adjacent to houses so that noise levels do not become an issue.
  4. Easy biking distance to a city transit stop.
  5. A gentle slope is preferable as it saves from having to pedal hard into jumps built on flat land (or having to build a large run-in).
  6. City property is preferred over private property as then we won't have to deal with a landowner as well.
  7. Wind shelter (trees, buildings, fences, etc...) is definitely a consideration as it's usually pretty windy around here in the spring time.
