Local Trail Conditions – May 26, 2014
More and more trails are opening up as the weather turns warmer. Expect the usual early season conditions. Note that this report is based on some first-hand reporting but also a lot of second- and third-hand info:
Lake Minnewanka – good to go with a few wet spots all the way to the ranger’s cabin, ridiculously busy on the weekend
Stoney Squaw – not yet
Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, Topp Notch [new berm-fest off of Star Wars], other Tunnel Mountain trails – good to go
Highline – YES!
Canmore Nordic Centre – lower trails are good [i.e. EKG], upper trails are likely wet; Killer Bees, Backdoor, Oven, Nector Noodle, Ziggy’s are closed until June 15 for wildlife migration.
Benchlands – all signs point to yes
Prospector – rumour has it the top half is wet
Prairie View + Jewell Pass + Stoney + Quaite – expect wet trail and maybe some snow up top, but the trail is open. Partial closure on Stoney until June 16 due to wildlife migration.
Chief Hector, Razor’s Edge – no info
Baldy – no info, likely snowy up top
Jumpingpound Loop – north side is great, south side has some moisture where the trail gets close to the creek, overall good
Jumpingpound Ridge + Cox Hill – mid-June at the earliest
West Bragg – mostly great, some mud in the shady areas and at logging road crossings
Ridgeback – surprisingly dry
Sulphur Springs, Elbow Valley – pretty good
Pneuma – getting wet by SLF, okay/good below that
SHAFT, Race of Spades, Special K, Moosepackers – snow up top, not ready yet
Family Guy – good from Toothless down
Toothless, Jean-Guy, Billy Dog – okay
Shoulda, Cya – good
Powderface loops – likely wet, but little info on the area
Elbow Loop – washouts, missing bridges, likely snow up top
Calgary trails [Fish Creek, Eastlands, 12 Mile, Bowmont, Nose Hill] – good to go

Was up on Ranger Summit and Strange Brew today (June 1). Ranger Summit is a little greasy for about 70% mud for about 10% and Hero Dirt for the other 20%. Over all in good shape. A few areas that could use some new drainage to sort things out.
As for Strange Brew the first 2/3 is awesome. Mostly dry with a few little muddy/greasy sections and lots of nice tacky clay to get things rolling. The bottom 1/3 on the other had is in pretty rough shape. There is lots of heavy mud and a couple sections that will require some fairly serious repair once things dry out.
All in all great pretty good early riding conditions.
