Trail Ideas on Moose Mountain

Have you got an idea of where a trail could be built? Good! Now post it up here.

Give as much or as little detail as you want. Note that building new trail in Banff is probably not going to fly, but here's hoping...

Pie in the sky XC singletrack...

I'm thinking of a few new trails on Moose:

The green line going all the way around is Sulphur Springs to Pneuma to the road to Moosepackers to Tom Snow. North is to the right.

  • Purple line east of the road - 2km connector from Sulphur Springs to the bottom of Race of Spades
  • Zig-zag red line - goes from just west of Station flats along a ridge to meet up with the purple connector
  • Pale blue line - follows an existing creek/drainage, but stays at least 100m away, up the slope
  • Long yellow line - goes from Tom Snow near the bridged creek crossing up the ridge to connect with where Pneuma will likely meet with Moosepackers, gains ~500m in 6km for a pretty decent climb

  • You're probably thinking, "Dude - no way! That'll take years to put together!" Maybe, but Pneuma came together in a couple of months, and it's not like it all has to be done in one season or anything...

OK, now you are talking...

I like where you are going with this and the acknowledgement that it will take multiple seasons to get there. Our immediate goal should be to finsh Pneuma. It still needs to be connected to Moosepackers. Also, once the spring rains arrive, the whole trail will have to be re-evaluated taking drainage and erosion issues into account, which may lead to more re-work. I think most of next season will be spent getting Pnuema just right.

After that, here are some projects I'd like to see:
1. connector from Moosepacker to Tom Snow that bypasses the wellsite gravel road (dark purple line on your map).
2. connector from the south end of Hot Laps to the parking lot at the start of Moose Mountain Road.

I like your red and blue lines, but why not connect them into Pnuema? I believe the long term plan was to build a connector from Pnuema to ROS just before the wellsite for those that don't want to climb the whole way up. Also, I think Special K intersects your yellow line, but I'm not sure where.

I hope the guys working on the Moose Mountain Endowment Fund see your picture :)

Hey - thanks for the

Hey - thanks for the comment! The two connectors you suggest should be easy enough to put together [Hot laps and the TS bypass], but you're right about getting Pneuma dialled in first.

The reason I don't have the red and blue trails connecting to Pneuma is two-fold:
1. It's a PITA to climb directly up the slope from the skinny purple connector to Pneuma.
2. Having a route down that slope from Pneuma makes those trails too easy to shuttle.

When I rode up Pneuma, I couldn't wait to ride back down. I'm guessing others will get the same idea "Oh hey, 6 km of flowy singletrack with almost no climbing, and there's a convenient road right beside it...". Basically, I'm thinking that riders [XC/AM/FR] will shuttle/ride to the start of RoS, then jump on Pneuma and bomb down the hill to Hot Laps and the highway. It's not a bad thing, I'm just saying that it will probably get more DH traffic then originally thought. Isolating the red and blue trails from Pneuma a little bit [bear in mind that the start of Pneuma and the skinny purple connector are only about 500m apart via Sulphur Springs] should help mitigate user conflicts. Just as it would be inconvenient to have people riding up RoS, so too would it be problematic to have a lot of DH on a mellower XC track.

As to the yellow line, yes, it would cross Special K. I screwed up on my GPS recording of K the last time I rode it, but I believe it largely follows the fall line parallel to the drainage, then crosses the drainage and surfs the ridge before turning NE and finishing on Tom Snow. I have a partial track saved at home that I should super-impose on this map. Now that I think about it some more, there's no reason not to use all the fun XC singletrack on Special K. Where it would deviate is at the top and bottom, 'cause it's not really possible to climb Special K at the top, and the bottom has two or three boggy areas that would be best to avoid. Keeping the yellow trail along the top and south side of the ridge means it should stay a little drier as well. The "hook" at the top is there to force a climb from Moosepackers. In fact, depending on where Pneuma runs to access 'Packers, there would be pretty much no way to get to the top without gaining at least 200m elevation.

Yellow Brick Road

I dug out my half-assed GPS track for Special K. I think I paused recording at the top and didn't figure it out until we were crossing the second [?] bridge. In the picture it's the red line with the K at the top. The yellow line could easily follow the existing Special K track for a good portion of the trail. Less trail to build!

Trails with Terry

I bumped into Terry at Bow on Saturday, but was so excited about my new shock, I forgot to get his coordinates. Anyone know how I can get in touch with him?

How about this...

Update - multi-area trail collection!

Sorry about the size. North is to the right. The track for RoS [dark blue line] is more accurate now - you can see how it ties into Diamond T Loop. Also, the two stacked loop trails tie in with Diamond T Loop. The ride up the ridge to the top of Moosepackers [yellow line] now follows the existing XC part of Special K. In the bottom right you can see the grey line for Tom Snow [sorta] and the blue line, which is Telephone Loop. This brings me to the next photo:

Again, sorry about the size. North is to the right. At the far right, the burgundy squiggle is the Jumpingpound Trail [not the same as JP/Cox - look for the Dawson trailhead]. This is connected to Telephone Loop [again, the blue loop] in the south by new trail that goes up and over Pine Top Hill, and to the west by a connector [also blue] to Tom Snow at the Pine Grove end. There's also a yellow connector from the north/soggy end of Telephone Loop back to Tom Snow.

Discuss!
