2009 Trail Days

We've got our Trail Building Days sorted out for the season.  Here is The List:

  • Saturday, May 30
  • Sunday, June 21
  • Sunday, July 19
  • Saturday, August 8
  • Saturday, August 22
  • Saturday, September 12

All the Trail Building Days will be based out of Station Flats, and will focus on Sulphur Springs and Tom Snow.  There is a ton of work to be done, so we'll need everybody we can get.  Details will be posted closer to the actual dates.

We also have Trail Building Nights, starting on the evening of Monday, May 25th and running the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month until further notice.  We'll be posting details of meeting places and times in the next couple of weeks.  The next few Trail Nights will be May 25th, June 8th and June 22nd, so save the dates!

Event posters?

Do you have any Trail Day Posters that can be printed off and hung up around work, bikes shops, hangouts, etc?

We're working on that.

We're working on that.   We'll see about cranking out some posters and getting them into the shops around Calgary.  In the meantime, mark the dates on your calendar or Outlook or whatever, send out the word to your friends to come build some trail.  Let the good times roll...

MMBTS Trail day #1

Just got back from the first MMBTS trail day.  Good times!  Very well organized, lots of fun.  I worked on the chunk of Pneuma that will go up the hill from the bottom of Moose Mountain Road and up the hill to Hot Laps.  It was hard slogging for these weary old bones.  We did pretty well, getting a couple hundred metres of trail done to the point where it could be ridden.  I even got to use the chainsaw, and still have all my limbs and fingers!

MMBTS Trail day #1

Yeah kudos to the MMBTS guys as their first trail day was definitely a success.  When we got to Moose it took the boys 36 seconds to recruit and put us to work.  We were supervised by few guys with way more experience than us which ended up being a great learning opportunity.  We were working on Toothless on a section being rerouted away from the natural water path which made for a much more exciting trail.  If some of you are still virgin trail builders, I strongly recommend you give it a try as it provides with such a rewarding feeling when you look back at the end result.  The boys at BaSE can’t wait to get involved again.  I tried to upload photos but this application had the best of me, you can see some at http://companies.to/base

Scouted a new line for Sulpur Springs

If you've ever been out to Sulphur Springs in the early season or after a solid rain, you may have noticed the old 4-way intersection and the area beyond are quite muddy.  This is because the trail sits at a very low spot on the bench above the creek.  CMBA hopes to change this by placing a trail slightly up the slope from there.  Here is a  potential route that could be built fairly easily:

The track of Sulphur Springs [red] is pretty old and doesn't match up exactly, but you get the idea.  The area has enough slope to drain, and it would be easy enough to create grade reversals by simply moving around the trees.  The trees are spaced far enough apart that there would be no need to remove any live ones - any saw work should be restricted to deadfall.

Tom Snow-Major Reroute

The last few KM of Tom Snow (Starting at the new bridge crossing) consists of low lying, flat trail sections with multiple bogs and creek crossings. It leads into an eroded hill climb heading straight along a cutline that is consistently washed out and no fun to ride.  We have scouted a reroute for this 1.2 KM (approx) section that will take riders up into the trees above the mucky meadows and twist and turn all the way to the top of the next major hill.  The proposed reroute will have considerably less impact on the creeks in the area, be more fun to ride and will require almost zero maintenance going forward. Stay tuned for GPS tracks and photos of the area.

Sept 12th work party

We had a few Calgary Outdoor Club members out on a recent work party and one earlier in the season. We would like to pull together a big group for the Sept work party. Is there someone i can contact once we know how big our group will be so that you are prepared for us.

Sept 12th

Great to hear you are going to put a big group together again for us. email me at vicepresident (at) CMBAlink.com with the final numbers. I will make sure the rest of the group knows. CMBA will even supply the beverages and BBQ afterwards this time. Thanks in advance for helping out.

Do you have Trail Building

Do you have Trail Building scheduled this December?

Done like dinner

Trail building is basically done for the year.  There are a couple of cleanup items, but nothing organized.  We'll be back out there in May, 2010!

updates

Is there any updates regarding 2010 Trail BUilding schedule?

  We don't have anything

We don't have anything written in stone for 2010 yet.  We are applying for grants and working toward getting approval to work on the GBCTA's West Bragg trail project.  Spring cleanup will probably happen in May, with the first major trail day happening in June [in theory].
