May 25 - Trail Building Night #1

The CMBA trail building season kicks off on May 25th!

When: May 25, 6:30 p.m. until we run out of light or get tired.  Please try to be on time.  This event goes rain or shine!  If you're running late, just go directly to the work site.

Where: Meet at the parking area at the 2km mark of Moose Mountain Road [click for map].  From there we will walk East ~350m to the actual work site.

What We'll Be Doing:  We will be clearing out deadfall from the trail route.  The deadfall is not particularly big - most of the dead trees are less than 3" in diameter.  Deadfall will be simply pulled off the trail so that it will not interfere with trail use or pose any danger to users.

Why:  Well, it's hard to ride over deadfall.  More importantly, this trail new section of trail will ultimately replace a 200m section of Sulphur Springs that is prone to erosion from water and is fairly dull to ride.

What to Bring:  We'll be in the woods, so wear appropriate clothing.  We recommend sturdy work boots or hiking boots, work gloves, long pants and a jacket.  Dress for the weather.  Bring some water and a snack if you like.  Remember - anything you pack in, you also need to pack out, including any recyclables or trash.  CMBA will be providing tools, but if you have a favourite chainsaw, mattock, Pulaski, fire rake or Mcleod, feel free to bring it.  Shovels will not be needed.

Who:  Trail Building Lead for the day is David Mills.  David will be distributing tools to volunteers, giving the safety/ZoD talk and providing direction.  He will also have waivers and CMBA membership forms.  If he has a chainsaw in his hands, run.  If you have some prior trail building experience and are interested in being a Crew Leader for the day, please send an e-mail to info@cmbalink.com with the subject "Crew Leader".

FAQ

Q: Is this legal?

A: Hell yes!  CMBA has permission from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development to work on several trail projects in the area, and this is one of them.

Q: Are you going to cut down any live trees?

A: The route that we have planned out should not require us to cut down ANY live trees.  If there's a choice between cutting down a live tree and changing the path of the trail, we'll change the path of the trail.

Q: Can I bring my bike so I can ride the trail afterwards?

A: Sure thing, but you'll need to keep your bike out of the way of the trail work.  Also, the trail will be cleared of deadfall when we're done, but not exactly smooth and easy-riding.  Natural hazards will exist, etc.

1st trail building night a great success!!!

Through the great effort of David and Jason from the executive and a small group of volunteers, the main part of the new reroute were cleared last night. With the trail building session happening on Sat the 30th, most of the trail should be completed. "Many hands make light work" my mother used to say (or was that " Idle hands are the devil's playground"?) so if you are available anytime on Sat come out and lend a hand. With a large group anticipated, bring a rake or other tools with you if you can. CMBA will have some tools there but if you can help out the better.

I will be there with my faithful dog Vinny directing traffic from Station Flats starting about 9:00 am. If you are arriving later, head up the road to the Sulphur Springs crossing and walk down the trail the meet the gang. Rob Irwin, president of CMBA, will be leading the group. Read the complete posting for more details.

Hats off to our volunteers. Remember these will happen the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.

Richard Link
Vice President, CMBA

Thanks to the volunteers

I'd like to say thanks to the volunteers for coming out and putting in a great effort.  The group met up at 6:30 as planned, waivers were signed, we did the ZoD talk and made our way to the start of the trail.  I was really impressed with the work ethic of the crew.  I've never seen that much deadfall get moved so fast, and the crew of two on mattock duty - yowza!  Special thanks to Jon from MMBTS for the loan of his brand new chainsaw.  I see Pil in his future...

The area of work is as shown in the image below:

The light green lines are Sulphur Springs and Pneuma.  The chubby dark red line is the new route.  Twisty singletrack in the trees?  Yes, I'm pretty sure this qualifies.  The work that still needs to be done includes cutting in the entrance and exit points to the existing trails, and buffing up the new section.

Here is the crew:
