May 30 - CMBA Trail Day #1
CMBA Trail Day #1
When: May 30, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Please try to be on time. This event goes rain or shine! If you're running late, just go directly to the work site.
Where: Meet at the Station Flats parking area [click for map]. From there we will walk West ~1km to the actual work site.
What We'll Be Doing: We will be clearing out deadfall from the trail route and constructing a bench-cut trail.
Why: The trail we are working on will bypass a wet section of Sulphur Springs. This has the benefits of being more sustainable and improving the user experience.
What to Bring: We'll be in the woods, so wear appropriate clothing. We recommend sturdy work boots or hiking boots, work gloves, long pants and a jacket. Bring sunscreen and bug repellent. Dress for the weather. Bring some water and your lunch. Remember - anything you pack in, you also need to pack out, including any recyclables or trash. CMBA will be providing some tools, but if you have a favourite chainsaw, mattock, Pulaski, rake or Mcleod, feel free to bring it. Shovels will probably not be needed.
Who: Trail Building Lead for the day is Robert Irwin. He will be giving the safety/ZoD talk and providing overall direction. He will also have waivers. If you have some prior trail building experience and are interested in being a Crew Leader for the day, please send an e-mail to info@cmbalink.com with the subject "Crew Leader".
FAQ
Q: Is this legal?
A: Hell yes! CMBA has a verbal agreement in place to work on several trail projects in the area, and this is one of them.
Q: Are you going to cut down any live trees?
A: The route that we have planned out should not require us to cut down ANY live trees. If there's a choice between cutting down a live tree and changing the path of the trail, we'll change the path of the trail. We will be pruning back branches, etc., but the idea is "less is more".
Q: Can I bring my bike so I can ride the trail afterwards?
A: Sure thing, but you'll need to keep your bike out of the way of the trail work. Also, until the work for the day is finished, it's recommended that you not ride on the trail.
If you have questions/comments, log in and post them!
Awesome day!
We had a really good day on Sulphur Springs, with two sections of trail "ready to ride". Work continued on the 500m bypass of a crappy section of the trail, and a separate 250m section of trail was started and finished in a single day!
Hats off to the volunteers that made this possible, including those from the Calgary Outdoor Club and the Spin Sisters.
If you want to ride the newly-built trail sections, they are both on Sulphur Springs. One is about 1km West of Station Flats, and the other is just after the left-turn berm, about 700m before the road crossing [assuming a counter-clockwise loop]. Pics to follow...
