CMBA Trail Day #4 - Saturday, August 8

When: Saturday, August 8, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Please try to be on time.  This event goes rain or shine [within reason]!  If you're running late, just go directly to the work site.  After the work is done, we'll be firing up the BBQ and having some hot eats and cold treats!!
Where: Meet at the Station Flats parking area [click for map].  From there we will ride [or walk] up Tom Snow to the actual work site, just before the second bridge.
What We'll Be Doing:  This is the second trail that will become the bypass route for much of Tom Snow.  We'll be doing a fair bit of heavy work, including clearing a lot of deadfall and roughing in the trail.
Why:  After years and years of riding through the mix of mud and cow poop that develops on Tom Snow every year, we'll have alternate routes.
What to Bring:  We'll be in the woods, so wear appropriate clothing.  We recommend sturdy work boots or hiking boots, work gloves, long pants and a jacket.  Dress for the weather.  Bring enough water for the day and some lunch.  Remember - anything you pack in, you also need to pack out, including any recyclables or trash.  CMBA will be providing some tools, but if you have a favourite chainsaw, mattock, Pulaski, rake or Mcleod, feel free to bring it.  Shovels will not be needed.

FAQ
Q: Is this legal?
A: Hell yes!  The CMBA has TFA to work on several trail projects in the area, and this is one of them.
Q: Can I bring my bike so I can ride the trail afterwards?
A: Definitely!  It will make it easier/faster to get to the work site.
Q: How many people do you need?

A: The more the merrier, but we'd like to see at least 40 people out.

I'm still a bit tired...

'Twas a long day working on the trail yesterday, but a good one!  We had volunteers from the CMBA, Spin Sisters and Calgary Outdoor Club swinging Pulaskis and moving deadfall.  Crew Leaders for the day were Becky and Chris.  Becky led her crew in deadfall removal and helped me re-route a previously flagged section, and Chris had his group rough in the tread.

Last week's rain was a blessing in disguise.  While Tom Snow was puntuated by mudholes every 20 feet, the area we were working in had drained quite nicely - well, almost.  That was the reason we needed to re-flag part of the route; one section ended up being fairly soggy after the rain, and in one really bad spot managed to collect about 12" of standing water.  Some of this would have been difficult to predict when everything was dry, as the slope is quite consistent.  The new line is farther up the slope and should be more sustainable.

I also had the opportunity to speak with Conservation Officer O'Connor, who was making his rounds late in the afternoon.  We talked about trail width, multi-user access and who's doing what in the area.  I let him know that the freeride trails off of Moose Mountain Road were starting to see horse, hiker and cow traffic.  He let me know about the FREE emergency rescue service [call Kananaskis Emergency Services 24-Hr: 1-403-591-7767] available to anyone who hurts themselves in Kananaskis Country [even helicopter extraction!].  Cool guy, and a mtn biker as well.

All in all, it was a great day and we got a lot of work done.  Many thanks to all the volunteers who came to lend a hand and make the trails better!

Hats off to the volunteers

Although I could only stay for part of the day, a big thank you to all the volunteers to tredged into the deep woods. I am always amazed at the regulars that always show up mixed with the newbies that come out for a great day of giving back to the sport. Hope you enjoyed the BBQ and Beverages!!!
