CMBA Trail Day #7 [Seriously? We've done that many?]
When: Saturday, September 19, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Please try to be on time. This event goes rain or shine [within reason]! If you're running late, just go directly to the work site. After the work is done, we'll be firing up the BBQ and having some hot eats and cold treats!! ...and after that, I'm going home, taking a shower and going to the pub...
Where: Meet at the Station Flats parking area [click for map]. From there we will ride [or walk] up Tom Snow to the actual work site, just before the second bridge. Bring your bike - it's easier...
What We'll Be Doing: This is going to be a fairly light day compared to most of the others. It's mostly buff and polish work.
Why: Doing these trail days has become a kind of habit... but a good one...
What to Bring: We'll be in the woods, so wear appropriate clothing. We recommend sturdy work boots or hiking boots, work gloves, long pants and a jacket. Dress for the weather. Bring enough water for the day and some lunch. Remember - anything you pack in, you also need to pack out, including any recyclables or trash. CMBA will be providing most tools. Shovels will actually be useful. If you're bringing tools, consider bringing some straps so you can carry them on your bike, 'cause I ain't doing it this time.
FAQ
Q: Is this legal?
A: Hell yes! The CMBA has TFA to work on several trail projects in the area, and this is one of them.
Q: Can I bring my bike so I can ride the trail afterwards?
A: Definitely! It will make it easier/faster to get to the work site.
Q: How many people do you need?
A: The more the merrier, but we'd like to see at least 20 people out.
Q: What pub are you going to afterwards?
A: Tough call. I'm not going any place with dancing, that's for damn sure. $9/pint, frequently surly staff, the ugly lights are on until at least 10. I like dancing - it's fun. However, after working on the trail all day in the sun and getting dirty, I just want to sit on my ass with a cold glass of beer in my hand and shoot the breeze with some friends. So, the pub it is. If I go to the Ship without my wife, she'll kill me. Maybe the Kensington Pub will work, or 510, or if I'm feeling lazy I'll go to the Garrison. The Garrison does sound good. Math Waitress will probably be there, or I'll get lucky and Waitress Who Forgets to Charge Us For All the Beer We Drank So As To Proprtionately [and Dramatically] Increase the Size of Her Tip will be working. There's an argument to be made that the Garrison is overpriced, but it's maybe $0.25 more than the Ship, the music isn't too loud, the staff is friendly, there's always something on the TV and the food is really quite good. They make a mean pizza, and the halibut is stellar. Also, I can walk there in 15-20 minutes, which is nice. I should ride my bike - the hill on 20th just isn't that bad, and the ones in Mt Royal are longer and steeper. The world needs more neighborhood pubs. If we could all walk to the bar in 15 minutes or less, there might be less drunk driving. I'm slowly convincing all my friends to move to my neighborhood. Soon, we will all walk to the pub, have a great time and walk home. Although riding there would be better - there's nothing quite like riding in an inch of dry, freshly-fallen snow at night. It makes this fantastic "fffffffffwwwwwww" noise, and it sparkles in the streetlight.
Bow 80 race day
You can also join CMBA at the Bow 80 on Sunday as well. Look for the "Party Hardy RV" and CMBA tent. We will be set up for the start of the race at 7:30 am are planning a ride around 9:30 am to inspect and test the new singletrack CMBA volunteers have built.
After a short morning nap, we will be ready to cheer on the winner when he (or she) crosses the finish line around 12:00 noon.
Trail Day Report
We didn’t have quite as many people out as last time, but we actually got a fair bit done. We rebuilt a few corners, pulled down most, if not all the remaining soft sides on the trail, re-benched several sections and generally cleaned stuff up. The trail joins all the way to Tom Snow, and we tricked, er convinced a few people to ride and hike it.
Bad news – our tents blew over, putting good-sized dents in the tops of both my and Chris’ vehicles. Some passersby moved the tents to a safe spot and put a note on my car letting us know what happened. To whoever took care of the situation, thanks very much!
