This month's Bowbay auction winner of a classic 57' Cruiser will be donating their funds to the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance. The 57' is a collector's item with a limited nuber available. This is number 133 of 160 and comes with a certificate of authenicity signed by Brian Sibthorpe and Doug Lafavor (of Kona). With the classic design, inspired by a 1920's Elgin, the locking gas tank that holds a sandwich along with two cold drinks, and a Brooks saddle. You will want to ride this bike as much as you want to stare at its beauty.

Implementation of the Bowmont Park Management Plan is moving ahead. The Management Plan requires that many informal trails be closed and a well-designed multi-use trail be established. The City is planning an information session on April 21, 11:00am - 3:00pm at the Silver Springs Community Association to discuss alignment of the multi-use trail(s) for the whole park.

The City of Calgary Parks is working with Calgarians to re-design Southland Park to meet the needs of current and future users. Projects planned include riverbank stabilization, pathway development, natural environments restoration as well as communication with users on park development options for the Class C sections of the park.
Displays will be set up to inform visitors about the work being done in Southland Park:
- Natural Areas/Bank Stabilization/Regional Pathway
- Adopt-a-park volunteer programs in Natural Areas
- Class C options for Southland Park

The campaign to raise awareness of clear-cut logging planned for Kananaskis was overwhelmingly successful. Hundreds, close to a thousand, letters were sent to government and industry. They know we're concerned about the impact logging will have on a highly valued natural resource. The government has to consider economic, social and environmental factors and they must work within a framework of laws and policies that govern who has access to Kananaskis and what they can do there.

Accompany a nature educator into unique natural areas of Bowmont Park, one of Calgary's finest Natural Environment Parks. A guided bike tour is designed to introduce you to the natural and cultural history of our region, as well as park management issues and plans for improvements. The tour will last approximately an hour and a half. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you can. Minimum age is 12 years old.

Location: Meet at the Home Road trail head at the east end of the Park.
This tour will follow paved and dirt trails and will touch on trail management issues. Please bring your own bike and wear a helmet.
Spray Lakes Sawmills, through a Forest Management Agreement with the government, determines where and when they'll clear-cut the forest. Under the Forest Management Agreement, the primary use of the forest management area is "for establishing, growing, harvesting and removing timber." Kananaskis is an industrial development zone - the only "protected" areas are the parking lots at the trailheads and the inaccessible alpine areas. Most of Kananaskis, the areas where people hike, cycle, ski and otherwise enjoy a true wilderness experience, is primarily designated as industrial. We need to reconsider this policy...

After an extensive planning process involving a wide variety of stakeholders, the City of Calgary has finallized the Twelve Mile Coulee Natural Environment Park Management Plan (.pdf 1037k). Please review the plan and send any comments to info@cmbalink.com.
An Information Session on the Draft 12 Mile Coulee Recommendations will be held at the Tuscany Club (212 Tuscany Valley Way NW, Calgary, AB T3L 2A7) on Sunday June 25th, 2006 from noon to 4pm. Please plan on attending to lend your voice to those of other bikers working to keep the park open to all.

City of Calgary Council has approved the 2006 Capital Budget allocation of $1,650,000 for implementation of the Bowmont Park Management Plan. The City has identified priorities with input from the Communication and Stewardship Committee (CMBA is represented) which are:
Priority 1: Visitor Services - Entry signage with park orientation and care information
Priority 2: Multi-Use Trail System
Priority 3: Habitat Restoration
The City has divided the management plan implementation into three geographical phases beginning on the east end of the park and moving westward over time.
