News Archive - 2002 Overwintering CMBA's Tools Thanks to Kip, CMBA now has a winter storage site for our tools. Bringing them together will allow them to be catalogued and tuned up for next spring. So, if you have any CMBA tools, the CMBA tent or BOB trailers we need them back. To trade the tools in your possession for a glass of wine bring them to Mike Zelensky's November 20 between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Email info@cmbalink.com if you need directions. If you have tools to drop off but can't make it on the 20th send an email to glenn.krahulic@tyrastrategies.com. We will make arrangements to gather them from you.
Trail Maintenance in K-Country
CMBA Raffle The draw for the first annual CMBA raffle was held on June 23, 2002 at the Station Flats parking area in Kananaskis Country (after the original location and date were rained out). The raffle was certainly a success as we sold just under 1,000 tickets. Thanks to the many who bought tickets and the bike stores in town that supported our efforts. A special thanks to the MEC who, although they were not a direct part of the raffle, allowed us to sell tickets in their store. Nose Hill Pilot Trail Mike and Pete would like to thank all those who have participated in the trail construction sessions so far. We have made excellent progress to date and are reviewing some more routing options and mowing with the City. We will be having some more sessions later in the summer (after mid-August) but due to the excellent summer we are holding off from any formal dates until then. If however you have a few friends and a hankering to do maintenance before then, just give Mike or Pete at call and they will organize an ad-hoc crew. But please do not do trail work on your own. Unless the work is ok'd by Parks and Rec it is considered vandalism! Pete pngriba@pgco.ab.ca 804-0619
CMBA Raffle The CMBA Raffle draw, originally scheduled for June 18, has been rescheduled to Sunday, June 23 at Station Flats in Kananaskis. The draw will take place approximately 1:00pm, after the Ridley's Solstice Race. Raffle tickets are still available at Ridley's Cycle or may be purchased at the race site on Sunday.
Kananaskis closures for the G8
A security area, six and a half kilometres in radius, will be established around Kananaskis Village. All entry to this area will be restricted to authorized individuals. The security area also extends to portions of Highway #40, between the northern park boundary at Canoe Meadows and the intersection with Highway #742 (Smith-Dorrien / Spray Trail). Vehicles are subject to search, and will travel in convoys under escort during the period of June 23-28. A limited number of campgrounds and day use areas outside this security area will also be closed, however the surrounding trails will remain open.

Calgary Parks Bylaw Calgary's 26-year-old Parks Bylaw is being updated and the public is invited to provide input at a series of Open Houses running May 13 through 16. All Open Houses take place from 5:00pm to 8:30pm and include presentations by Parks staff at 6:15pm and 7:30pm
See the City of Calgary website for more information.
Update on the ROWG trail use recommendations Thanks to the broad participation by bikers at the open houses, there are a number of positive trail recommendations that are moving forward from the ROWG group. There are also some disappointments. These recommendations will be presented at an open house in Canmore on June 10 (tentatively at 7pm). We need another big showing at the open house. Please attend and voice your opinion. 35th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup The 35th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 26th from 10am - 1pm. CMBA will be leading a group in Bowmont park and is looking for more volunters. Come out and support CMBA's efforts in Bowmont by helping us keep the pathways and river clean. Phone Ewan Nicholson at 288-9108 or email ewannicholson@hotmail.com.
IMBA Summit Mobilizes Mountain Bike Advocates
Group Leader Orientation session The City and CMBA will be holding a Group Leader Orientation session on Tuesday May 7 at 6:00pm, followed by a talk on trail maintenance. Anyone interested in becoming a trail crew supervisor must attend this session before being allowed to lead work parties on Nose Hill. Note that this includes anyone who went to the session last year, as you need to be recertified every year. We would like to have several additional people attending this session in order to reduce the work load on our existing crew leaders and to provide us with more flexibility in choosing work days. To sign up, or for more information, email info@cmbalink.com.

The Management Plan will be finalized in April 2002 and is expected to go before the SPC in May or June. CMBA will be there to support the management plan, as well as to state our position on issues such as environmental protection and the equivalent impact caused by hikers and cyclists.
