Bowmont Park Management Plan
December 2003

Bowmont riderThe Bowmont Natural Environment Park Management Plan was presented to the Standing Policy Committee of the Community and Protective Services Committee (read selected Aldermen) on October 29, 2003. The Plan that was presented was approved by the Committee and will now go before City Council for what is generally a formal approval.

CMBA have been involved over the three years that the Plan has been in the making. We support the Plan and are pleased with the outcome. As cyclists, we retained access to all of the same trails that will be open to walkers, hikers etc. We need to respect that access. The process treated mountain bicyclists as equal partners and park users, with respect to other park user groups.

Dirt Jump Park Update
September 2003

John airWell....after a lot of walking, talking and nail biting, we have some great news....we have a potential site for our first dirt jump park in Calgary...

It can be ready as early as this spring, and the location is excellent for all riders....easy road, and bike path accessibility, and a big parking lot to boot.

Are you interested in helping out? PLEASE, get involved with us, and continue to show your support (and buy a membership) to CMBA. We will be calling for help to build this soon, so keep watching for info as it unfolds.

Thanks for your support thusfar, and hope to see all of you with shovels in hand soon.

Kipper,  CMBA President

Final clean up on Moose Mountain, Sunday, September 28th
September 2003

The final clean up of Jean Guy on Moose Mountain is scheduled for Sunday, September 28th at 12:00 noon. There will be a BBQ and draw prizes from Pinkbike, COP and Calgary Cycle. Bring gloves and something to haul out wood, like an old backpack, bungies and/or straps. Watch the website for updates as details get finalized.

More work on Moose Mountain, Wednesday, August 27th
August 2003

NickTrail-work on the deconstruction of Jean-Guy is more than half complete. We will meet again on Wednesday at 7:00pm, at the top parking lot at the end of Moose Mountain Road. We will then head down to where most of the stunts were just below the trailhead to do a few more hours of work. Most of the remainning work will involve hiking-out the remaining foreign lumber. If you have compression straps (3 to 4 feet long), they are ideal for strapping the wood together for carry-out. Otherwise bring some good shoes/boots, refreshments and you'll be set.

For those who did not come out on Sunday afternoon, but are thinking of lending a hand, I can say that you missed a great day. We got lots done and had a great time doing it. The after party/BBQ in the parking-lot capped it off nicely.

Rate Your Riding for the 2003 IMBA Report Card
August 2003

IMBAAs students head back to school, mountain bikers are issuing final grades for the 2003 IMBA Report Card. The Report Card provides an annual analysis of mountain bike access and advocacy progress for U.S. states, Canadian provinces and other countries.

In addition to a letter grade, each area's trail riding opportunities and threats are summarized. Grades are based on a number of factors: singletrack access, land manager attitudes, relations with other trail user groups and the long-term outlook for mountain biking.

Moose Mountain trail day and BBQ, Sunday August 24th
August 2003

We will be meeting at the top parking lot of Moose Mountain Look-out Road at 1:00pm on Sunday, August 24th. The goal will be to take apart as much of the stunts on upper Jean-Guy as possible and to hike the foreign lumber out. Tools you should bring are hammer and/or pry-bar, leather gloves, back-pack, shoes, and a smile.

We will work for 4 hours, quit at 5:00 and have a BBQ. There will be hotdogs and buns and condiments will be provided. You can also cook your own meat if you so choose. So bring a friend or two and come on out.

The Future of Unsanctioned Mountain Bike Trails on Moose Mountain
August 2003

NickAs many may be aware, there have been 5 or so new trails cut on Moose Mountain over the last four years or so. Traffic on these trails increased at an exponential rate as more and more riders became aware of their existence and as improvements were made making them more and more fun to ride.

Some may also be aware of rumours of imminent action by provincial government agencies to close these trails down. CMBA is taking action to try to save these trails or to create alternate sanctioned trails that support freeriding.

Nose Hill Park Trail Construction
July 2003

Redeem yourself after a whole week of Stampeding with one more PARTY! CMBA is organizing trail construction parties on Nose Hill Park for the fourth year running. These efforts have been hugely successful in building up cycling as a credible use of the park, and we want to maintain the intertia.

We are meeting at the 64th avenue parking lot on July 12 and 13th (Saturday and Sunday). The sessions start at 9:00am and are a maximum of 2 hours long, but usually 3 hours by the time we get to the trail location and back.

Please, no open toes and please bring work gloves or cycling gloves. If you can attend please call Pete Griba at 804-0619 so he can get a rough idea of how may Pulaski's and other tools to bring.

Dirt Jump Park Update
June 2003

John air Earlier this year CMBA asked for input on potential dirt jump parks. We received a large number of suggestions that resulted in over 30 potential sites being identified. Danny and John from the Dirt Jump Park committee visited each of the sites. They evaluated them on a number of criteria that included access to dirt, potential to disrupt other people, access to water, terrain and closeness to facilities such as Mac's (got to have a slurpee from time to time).

Through this process 4 sites were picked. Last week they were presented to a number of City personnel in order to gain feedback and move the selection of a site forward.

More on Dirt Jump Parks
February 2003

We would like to thank everyone for the great responses we've received regarding our push for a City approved dirt jump park.

We'd also like to note that there have been some requests for an indoor park, at this time the costs involved in something like that would make it a little too much to ask for. Let's prove to the city that a dirt jump park is a good idea before we start asking for everything on our wish list.

CMBA works with City to develop Dirt Jump Parks
January 2003

John air CMBA is working with the City of Calgary to locate appropriate areas to develop dirt jump parks. The dirt jump parks will provide sanctioned areas for freeriders to improve their skills and enjoy their sport. The long term goal is to locate parks in each quadrant of the City in order to allow access by bike or public transportation. This will provide facilities for young riders that do not have access to a car for transportation to less accessible venues such as COP. The initial goal is to locate a single site that is accessible and meets the immediate needs of freeriders. This site will be developed as a demonstration site. If it is successful then other sites will be identified and developed.
