Road and Pathway Cycling Survey
October 2005

The City of Calgary is conducting a survey on pathway use and road cycling. The primary focus is on safety and users' perceptions regarding safety while using Calgary's multi-use pathway system or cycling on Calgary's streets. The surveys will solicit opinions about satisfaction regarding the current level of education for pathways users, road cyclists or motorists. Users will also be asked for their feedback regarding issues of enforcement on the pathways system. The City will use this information to improve pathway and cyclist safety.

On October 22, 2005, the public is invited to drop into the Animal Services Centre (2201 Portland Street SE) anytime between 10am - 4pm to complete a Pathways Survey or a Road Cycling Survey. Representatives from pathways, roads and bylaw enforcement will be available during the day to discuss individual issues with concerned citizens.

Trail Building at the Canmore Nordic Centre
September 2005

K-Country logo Now that your season is slowing down and you have fulfilled your quota of mountain biking hours for the summer, how about partaking in some trail building!? There is a brand new 5 kilometre single track trail being built at the Nordic Centre. The Friends of Kananaskis Country, along with a few key community members are making it their goal to have the trail ready to ride by the beginning of next spring. In an effort to make this happen The Friends of Kananaskis Country are organizing Sunday morning work parties (from 9am - noon) from now until the snow flies. If you are interested in giving back to our valley's trail system please give Erika Jensen a call at 678-5593 or e-mail friends@kananaskis.com and let her know what date(s) you are able to attend. If it is any added incentive, Donuts (and maybe some other special requests) will be provided at the trail head.

Park and pathway closures due to flooding
June 2005

Due to heavy rains and flood conditions, a number of areas throughout southern Alberta have been closed. This includes many areas within the City, including most of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

See http://www.calgary.ca for closures within the City, and http://www.albertaparks.ca for Provincial park closures.

More opposition to the Nose Hill Trail and Pathway Plan
June 2005

NHPCB members onlyA previously disbanded group called the Nose Hill Park Community Board (NHPCB) has appeared from nowhere and convinced Ald. Dale Hodges (and in turn, City Council) to delay acceptance of the Parks and Recreation plan 'until Parks and Recreation can review the NHPCB plan.'

The Community Board has initiated a series of pseudo public meetings to 'gather public input'. We are urging all cyclists to attend at least one of these so-called public meetings. The meetings are:

  • June 15, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Triwood Community Association, 2244 Chicoutimi Dr NW
  • June 16, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association, 5600 Centre St N
  • June 22, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Dalhousie Community Association, 5432 Dalhart Rd NW

While we do not want to be rude or obnoxious it is important that you attend and to express yourself. We have found they intend to 'collect statistics' and compare their plan against the City's to gather support for their plan. Their meetings are not endorsed by the City as the City views them as just a private group trying to drum up believers.

Nose Hill Trail and Pathway Plan
May 2005

We are relieved to announce that the Nose Hill Trail and Pathway Plan was approved with little modification at the Standing Policy Committee (SPC) on May 4. The plan went to a full sitting of City Council on May 16. Yes, there are still groups lobbying to scrap the plan, ban bikes or exempt themselves from the plan, however in the end we hope reason prevails.

April 2005

The Trail and Pathway Plan will be appearing in front of the Standing Policy Committee (SPC/CPS), most likely at the May 4, 2005 meeting. For procedural reasons we will not know this for sure until the Friday before the meeting, but if you want to show up please call or email Pete and he can add you to a 'call-out' list for the day of the meeting.

March 2005

The CMBA exec would like to thank any members who came out to the second Nose Hill Trail Plan Open House on Saturday February 26, or wrote letters, or who attended the first Open House for that matter! We appreciate all the support we have received.

In summary, the City has upgraded the trail plan from Concept 3 according to public feedback from the first open house and also from stakeholder suggestions. The detailed plan is on the Parks website.

Kananaskis Country Trail Users Group
March 2005

K-Country logo CMBA attended a meeting of the "Kananaskis Country Trail Users Group" on Wednesday, March 9th in Calgary. This is a group that originated during the past couple of years due to proposed cutbacks in winter ski trail grooming and downed tree removal on XC trails in Kananaskis and the user fees that were proposed to rectify the issue. The group is currently mainly made up of seniors groups and XC ski clubs with some snowmobile and equestrian representation. There has no been any cycling representation up until this time.

Dirt Jump Park
March 2005

John air We have been very busy with trying to locate the new location for a first class jump site. As some of you know, we lost our original site off Nose Hill on the river. The Alberta Transportation Utility was "most" helpful on providing the land, however we found the City had so many restrictions on the property, it wasn't worth it.

Nose Hill Bike Restrictions
January 2005

Our opponents are at it again - proposing trail restrictions that conveniently exempt themselves. We ask that you attend the open house on Saturday January 15, then follow up with a phone call or letter to your Alderman.

New Pathway Plan for Nose Hill
January 2005

Calgary Parks and Recreation is hosting two open-house sessions in 2005 to view the proposed pathway plan. Any cyclist who wishes to attend or present is encouraged to do so.

Date: Saturday, January 15, 2005
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with formal presentations at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Place: Edgemont Community Association, 33 Edgevalley Circle N.W.

The second one is being held February 26 to present the recommended options. Both meetings allow for "formal presentations" and CMBA is trying to get clarification from the City as to what that means. All cyclists who use Nose Hill, wish to use Nose Hill or even live in the same town as Nose Hill should attend and make their desires known (the Terms of Reference consider Nose Hill a regional park.)
