Central Alberta MTB Report by Jordan Sinclair July 2000 What happened in Red Deer in 1999? Lots!!! Turple Brothers of Red Deer won the first ever CMBA Bike Shop of the Year award. How? Turple Brothers bought a one year membership to the CMBA for every person who purchased a hardcore mountain bike. Gordon Turple and Cycle/Service Manager Jeff Pennington deserve kudos' for their financial and moral support. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It would be great to see other shops follow their example. Not only did Turple Brothers help financially, they, along with Bryan's Cycle & Skidoo promoted the Central Alberta Bicycle Club (CABC) and sponsored local race teams. Good news: Red Deer's Recreation Department is working with the CABC to find an appropriate location for mountain bicyclists to enjoy. Peter Churchill, CABC's VP, has been working closely with this department and believes there will be positive developments for Red Deer riding in the future. Bad news: hikers and cyclists who are trespassing on private property are posing problems in an area near the Mackenzie trail system also known as "Southpark". Land owners are frustrated. Signs have been posted asking people to keep out, but only a few obey. Semi-regular patrols had cut the numbers down, but owners are still seeing unwanted visitors. PLEASE respect their land and stay out. Remember, those who enter the forbidden zone create a black eye for all those responsible riders. Also, since the CMBA was unable to send out information to us folks in 1999 the executive has extended our membership for the year 2000. Keep in mind it is only $10.00 for the year and it goes to a worthwhile cause, besides do you want to do all that paperwork? |
