Dirt Jump Park

For the past 3 years CMBA has actively been promoting the creation of dirt jump parks in Calgary. We have identified a number of sites with potential and have attempted to get three sites constructed. While all of the sites had good potential, development was prevented on each site due to liability issues and politics. <p>The failure of these attempts has made it clear that policy changes have to occur at the City Administration level before a dirt jump park will become a reality. CMBA is now working with City Parks planning personnel to have City Parks given a mandate to create and manage dirt jump parks.

Clear-cut Logging in Kananaskis III

Spray Lakes Sawmills, through a Forest Management Agreement with the government, determines where and when they'll clear-cut the forest. Under the Forest Management Agreement, the primary use of the forest management area is "for establishing, growing, harvesting and removing timber." Kananaskis is an industrial development zone - the only "protected" areas are the parking lots at the trailheads and the inaccessible alpine areas. Most of Kananaskis, the areas where people hike, cycle, ski and otherwise enjoy a true wilderness experience, is primarily designated as industrial. We need to reconsider this policy.

Road and Pathway Cycling Survey

The City of Calgary is conducting a survey on pathway use and road cycling. The primary focus is on safety and users' perceptions regarding safety while using Calgary's multi-use pathway system or cycling on Calgary's streets. The surveys will solicit opinions about satisfaction regarding the current level of education for pathways users, road cyclists or motorists. Users will also be asked for their feedback regarding issues of enforcement on the pathways system. The City will use this information to improve pathway and cyclist safety. On October 22, 2005, the public is invited to drop into the Animal Services Centre (2201 Portland Street SE) anytime between 10am - 4pm to complete a Pathways Survey or a Road Cycling Survey. Representatives from pathways, roads and bylaw enforcement will be available during the day to discuss individual issues with concerned citizens.

Now that your season is slowing down and you have fulfilled your quota of mountain biking hours for the summer, how about partaking in some trail building!? There is a brand new 5 kilometre single track trail being built at the Canmore Nordic Centre. The Friends of Kananaskis Country, along with a few key community members are making it their goal to have the trail ready to ride by the beginning of next spring. In an effort to make this happen The Friends of Kananaskis Country are organizing Sunday morning work parties (from 9am - noon) from now until the snow flies. Contact Erika Jensen at 678-5593 or e-mail friends&#60;kananaskis.com for more information.
