No Cycling In City Parks This Summer

Yes, the above title rings true, if you don't call, write and show up for the SPC meeting. We need people to speak at the meeting on Wednesday the 16. If you can attend and would like to have some help from CMBA please email us at info@cmbalink.com.

Calgary Parks & Recreation is proposing to close most trails on the escarpment of Nose Hill Park to cycling

· They banned cycling on most trails on the escarpment before initiating a process to gain public input. Cyclists have not been allowed to participate in a meaningful way.

· They created a process that developed management options for trails in the Park without any input from experts. The proposed trail management options have not been reviewed for ecological impact, soils impact, human factors, or proper trail design. Many of the recommendations are poorly thought out, are potentially damaging to the park and restrict use without protecting the environmental integrity of the Park.

· They have ignored all scientific evidence and their own department's personnel who have identified that mountain bicycling does not cause more environmental damage than hiking. Parks & Recreation is promoting the false perception that environmental degradation in Nose Hill is being caused by cyclists.

They are planning to use this as a model for evaluating trails in all other natural areas in Calgary.

The proposal is being brought before the City Council Standing Policy Committee on Community & Protective Services

March 15, 2000 9:00AM.
City Hall

Rockies Challenge
Indoor Mountain Bike Competition

At the Coors Light Calgary Outdoor Adventure Sports Show
March 24-26, 2000

3 Stages: Time Trial, Dual Elimination, Stock Trials & Stunts

Following on the recent spectacular success of the North Shore Indoor competition at the Vancouver Outdoor Adventure Sports Show, Altitude Events and National Event Management are pleased to announce the Rockies Challenge Indoor Mountain Bike Competition at the Calgary Round Up Centre March 24-26, 2000.

This event is designed to test fitness, technical ability, and all out aggressive riding skills. There will be three stages: a time trial, a dual elimination, and a stock trials competition. Points will be awarded in each competition and the rider with the lowest point total at the end of the competition wins.

The course will be both indoor and (weather permitting) outdoor. The course will be a dirt track featuring some of the features that you might find on a downhill mountain bike course: berms, jumps, tabletops, as well as a few that you might find on the north shore, like ramps. Inside the loop, several obstacles and stunts will be set up, such as teeter-totters, log pyramids, and wheelie drops.

Development In Kananaskis

What began decades ago with the designation of Kananaskis Country is about to reach fever pitch as the values and objectives of government, developers, and the people of Alberta meet face to face.

As you probably are aware, Genesis Land Developers are proceeding with their proposed Spray Lakes Kananaskis playground: a four-season resort near Tent Ridge that includes a ski hill, gondola, a 27-hole golf course, accommodations for 2,000 overnight guests, a fitness spa, retail development and convention centre, a heli/cat ski operation on Mount Sparrowhawk, and a boat tour facility on Spray Lakes.

The first stage of the process is underway - public review of the project descriptions and terms of reference for the Environmental Impact Assessment. YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AND PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROCESS! This is a massive project, which has over 15 environmental groups taking extensive action. It relates directly to the results of last year's Kananaskis Development Policy, and will likely change the way you use K-Country.

Public input is being accepted on the terms of reference now until March 7. To get a copy of the proposal, call Genesis at (403) 265-8079, toll-free: 1-800-341-7211, fax: (403) 266-0746, e-mail: genesis@genesisland.com, or download from www.genesisland.com. Copies are available for viewing in the public libraries of Canmore, Banff, and Calgary (main), at Alberta Environment in Canmore, and at the Calgary Area Outdoor Council. If you'd like to find out what opponents of the project are saying, visit the Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society's website at www.rockies.ca/cpaws.

Calgary Open Space Plan

Do you want to be able to ride in future parks? If so maybe you should give your input into the open space plan.

The final draft has been released for public input.  This document will guide the planning, development, and management of Calgary's public open spaces.  Comments will be accepted until April 21 via CAOC.  A copy of the draft is available for review at the CAOC office, 1111 Memorial Drive NW.
