IMBA Rules Of The Trail 1. Ride on open trails only.
1. Roulez seulement sur chemin ouvert.
http://www.imba.com/about/trail_rules.html In this issue: Ammendments To Nose Hill Bylaw Look Promising Good news! Thanks to the hard work of Alderman Joanne Kerr an amendment was added to the Nose Hill Trail Policy. This amendment allows cyclists to participate in the planning and development of trails on Nose Hill and allows us to have meaningful input into trails that we can ride. It also allows us to protect the Park environment by choosing trails that are environmentally sensitive and building/modifying them to be sustainable. We can then participate in the rehabilitation of fall line and other unsustainable trails. The one downside is that we are still not treated as equals to hikers in that we will be banned from the undesignated "pedestrian and monitor" trails while hikers will not. Ammendment Details The following is an unofficial copy of the amendment added to the Nose Hill Trail Policy on April 3, 2000 Direct the Administration to monitor and evaluate the undesignated formalized trails, on a trail by trail basis, (including the multi-use and pedestrian only) as to:
Direct the Administration to work with the MAC of Nose Hill Park, the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance and other interested and knowledgeable stakeholders, to review the International Mountain Bicycling Association "Trail Care Crew, Trailbuilding School Manual" and other pertinent information to determine the appropriateness of selecting and designing, both now and in the future, trails for Nose Hill Park and the newly planned Inland Park. Further, direct the administration that a candidate trail be identified and built applying these trail building methods. The administration is to report back after one year regarding the success of this trail. Direct the Administration to report back to the SPC on CPS one year after the adoption of this report as to the effectiveness of the recommendations. If significant problems are encountered in the meantime, that the Administration have the flexibility to work with the affected stakeholders in order that changes may be made to support Nose Hill Park as a natural environment park. Further that encouragement be given to the cycling community to take an active role in the ongoing management of Nose Hill Park and apply to sit on the Nose Hill Park Management Advisory Committee. Evan Thomas Creek Management Plan The following concerns an area of great importance to wildlife: the (somewhat) protected area surrounding Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country. This is an area that has already seen lots of development (Kananaskis Hotels, Nakiska, etc.) and might well see more in the future. BUT there are some good possibilities here too - for example, the government is considering increasing the protection for the ecologically important Evans Thomas area (one of two key habitat areas in K-country for Grizzly bear) by creating a provincial park in this area. If you'd like to help, here's what I suggest: 1. Obtain a copy of the Draft Terms of Reference for this plan by calling (toll free 310-0000) 678-5508. Remember that the deadline for providing written comments is May 15th, 2000. Evan Thomas Protected - Areas Management Plan Draft Terms of Reference for the Evan Thomas protected areas management plan are now available for public review. These include the Evan Thomas Provincial Recreation Area as well as the Ribbon Creek, Ribbon Lake, Guinn Pass, Galatea Creek and Lillian Lake Provincial Recreation Areas. They contain hotels, a Youth Hostel, golf courses, downhill ski facility, camping and day use facilities. Together they form one of the most important parts of Kananaskis Country. A management plan for these areas will be prepared during the next year. Any interested groups or individuals are invited to attend the Open House or obtain a copy of the Draft Terms of Reference for this plan by calling (toll free 310-0000) 678-5508 and providing written comments by May 15th, 2000.
