Bike Box Storage To / From the Calgary International Airport

Why box? An ideal bike tour would not involve the inconvenience of finding temporary storage space for bicycle packing materials. Conversely, an ideal bike tour does not start or end with smashed components or worse. For reasonable alternatives to using bike boxes see Bagging/Tarping a Bicycle for Air Travel.
Distances: Bicycling distance from the Calgary International Airport to downtown Calgary is approximately 15.5 km. The on-street bike route portion (wide curb lanes) is 2 km of this distance while the balance is off-street multi-use pathways. Allow a leisurely hour with some map route-finding. Calgary's west City limits on Hwy 1A (Crowchild Trail) is another 18 - 23 km (depending on the route) beyond the downtown core. - Workstation: Elbow Valley Cycle Club's "Bob Stevenson Memorial Bike Workstation". Turn right (E) out of the right most arrivals level door. Covered space, 2 workstands, 6 - inverted 'U' bike racks, bike box bin. Volunteers endeavor to have the bike box bin stocked especially during the bicycle-friendly summer months. - Baggage storage: at departures level at the Airport, located just E of Harvey's Restaurant - 403-735-1449, e-mail infodesk@yyc.com $5.00 / day for bike boxes, flattened cardboard or hardshell cases. Discount rates for extended durations can be negotiated with staff.
- 'Doorstep' hotel: Delta Calgary Airport Hotel - is located directly on the Airport's grounds, 2001- Airport Road NE. This is directly across the street (N) from the EVCC's bike workstation. www.albertadeltahotels.com/deltacalgaryairport.html 403-291-2600 or toll free 1-800-268-1133. Consult the hotel's staff for their amenability for storing bike packing materials in exchange for a couple of guest's bed nights. There are a range of other hotels within a 7 min. taxi ride from the Airport, all within NE Calgary.
- Sentinel Self-Storage: is located barely 100 m S of Airport's access pathway in the Airport's S edge industrial area - 2135 - Pegasus Road NE, 403-250-3894. www.springstreet.com/selfstorage/sentinel/calgary.html 5 min. taxi ride from the arrivals level. Potentially attractive to self-supported cycle touring groups with lots of bike packing materials. Smallest available storage space is 3X5X8 ft. Short term rental is $43.00/ month + $3.01 GST. Alberta Motor Association members (go figure) receive a 30% discount. Access between 7 AM & 9 PM daily. "Margaret" & "Dennis" are site managers. Monthly (renewal) rentals are due on the next month's identical calendar
- Accessible bike shop: Cyclepath (North) bicycle shop - is the closest bike shop to the Airport and have packed and un-packed many bikes for / from airline transport. #10-2015-32 Ave. NE, 403-250-5654. This location is 1 block W of the on-street portion of the Airport bike route Airport (19 St. NE). Available storage space for bike boxes varies with their stock. Negotiate individually in advance.
